These include individual collections, organizational collections, sub-collections, files, and cataloged materials. The Eastman School of Music Archives, a part of Watanabe Special Collections, also possesses many departmental and administrative papers relating to the operations of the School, but these are restricted files and have not been included here.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#Individual\">Individual<\/a> and <a href=\"#Organization\">organization<\/a> collections are similar in that they are groups of materials that have been gathered by some creating agency as a result of some activity. This activity may be the normal conduct of the individual or organization\u2019s affairs, or it may be the deliberate accumulation of materials pertinent to some subject area.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#Sub\">Sub-collections and files<\/a> are somewhat loose designations and refer to materials accumulated within and by the Sibley Music Library and according to some organizing principle. These are often of a historical or documentary nature, but may also be relatively large sub-divisions of the cataloged collections. Files in particular are usually loose cumulations of individual miscellaneous items sharing some common characteristic or purpose.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"#Biblio\">bibliography<\/a> of cataloged works relating to the history of the School has been appended. The items may be found in the collections of Sibley Library.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"Individual\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Individual Special Collections<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/esm4.esm.rochester.edu\/sibley\/files\/Samuel-Adler-Papers-2001-2018-Gifts.pdf\">Samuel Adler Collection<\/a> <br \/>\nLocation: C4B 9,7-10,3 <br \/>\n30 linear feet<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Adler was professor of composition at the Eastman School of Music from 1966 to 1994, and was chair of the composition department from 1973. Adler studied composition with Walter Piston, Randall Thompson, Paul Hindemith, Aaron Copland, and Herbert Fromm. He was also an active conductor. Adler composed over 300 published works including four operas, six symphonies, a ballet, six concerti, eight string quartets, seven cantatas, and an extensive amount of chamber music, choral music, and songs. He received numerous awards and recognition for his work. The papers include manuscripts, files of events (1940-1992) featuring Samuel Adler\u2019s works, Samuel Adler\u2019s files of correspondence with orchestras and publishers, awards and diplomas, scrapbooks, and other miscellaneous items.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/esm4.esm.rochester.edu\/sibley\/specialcollections\/findingaids\/antique-glass-slides\/\">Antique Glass Slides (SC1996.9)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Location: M1B 6,1-3<\/p>\n<p>25 linear feet<\/p>\n<p>The collection comprises images of both musical iconography and scores, sources unknown but possibly including items from the Sibley Music Library. In addition, the collection includes three boxes of slides documenting the construction and facilities of the Eastman School of Music up to the early 1950\u2019s. The collection gives an insight into the teaching of undergraduate music history at the Eastman School by documenting what works and composers received greatest emphasis in instruction. It is perhaps most valuable as a means of documenting the construction of and life at the School during its early years. (finding aid available)<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/esm4.esm.rochester.edu\/sibley\/specialcollections\/findingaids\/antoine\/\">Josephine Antoine Collection<\/a> (SC1996.10)<\/p>\n<p>Location: M1B 5,5-6<\/p>\n<p>2.25 linear feet<\/p>\n<p>The collection includes documentary sources chronicling Josephine Antoine&#8217;s (1908-1971) career in American opera. Antoine was a successful opera singer who performed with the Metropolitan Opera from 1935 to 1947 and taught at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester from 1957 to 1959, and later again from 1966 until the time of her death. She also taught for periods at Indiana University, University of Colorado, Los Angeles Conservatory, University of Texas, and at Arizona State University. Scrapbooks in the collection cover the years 1928 to 1945. Programs from opera and concert performances by Antoine are included, as well as a few programs from performances by other musicians. (Finding aid available)<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Warren Benson Papers<\/strong> (000.37)<\/p>\n<p>Location: A4A 1,1<\/p>\n<p>1 linear foot<\/p>\n<p>Professor of composition from 1967 to 1994. Benson studied theory at the University of Michigan and was a timpanist with the Detroit Symphony before coming to Eastman. His compositions include works for percussion and wind ensemble, band, chorus, vocal and instrumental solos, concerti, and chamber music. The collection contains manuscripts by other composers.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>David Craighead Papers (000.49)<\/strong>&gt;<\/p>\n<p>Location: A3A 2,3<\/p>\n<p>.5 linear feet<\/p>\n<p>A small collection of materials relating to the career of professor of organ, David Craighead.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>DeGaetani Vocal Chamber Music (996.4)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Location: A3B 7,3-4<\/p>\n<p>4 linear feet<\/p>\n<p>Jan DeGaetani was an internationally renowned mezzo-soprano and served on the faculty of the Eastman School of Music from 1973 until her death in 1989. DeGaetani studied with Sergius Kagen at the Julliard School of Music. She was especially recognized for her performances of twentieth-century music and many compositions were written specifically for her by various composers including Elliott Carter, George Crumb and Samuel Adler. DeGaetani was an active recording artist and received numerous Grammy Award nominations. In 1976-77, she held the highly honored position of Kilbourn Professor at Eastman. This collection constitutes here library of vocal chamber music. Fennell is remembered as the founder and conductor of the Eastman Symphonic Wind Ensemble. He was also a percussionist. The archive contains correspondence, materials relating to concert appearances, and various ensemble and orchestra files.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Fitch\/Finley Collection (SC1998.73)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Location: M4A 2,6-3,2<\/p>\n<p>12 linear feet<\/p>\n<p>The collection includes manuscripts and publications relating to Theodore Fitch and Lorraine Finley-Fitch of Rochester. Theodore Fitch was a member of the Eastman School of Music theory and composition faculty from 1928 to 1932. Lorraine was active in the preparation of song translations for publication. Fox.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Harry Freeman Papers (992.4)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Location: A3A 7,4<\/p>\n<p>.1 linear foot<\/p>\n<p>Trumpet faculty member from 1924 to 1927 and first trumpet of the Eastman Theatre Orchestra. Before coming to Eastman, Mr. Freeman was a trumpeter in Broadway theatre houses that maintained large symphony orchestras to accompany silent films and vaudeville acts. In 1910\/11 he traveled with the Sousa Band on a world tour. Harry Freeman was the grandfather of Robert Freeman, former Director of the Eastman School of Music. The archive contains pocket diaries (1911), personal correspondence, a biographical sketch by his son Henry Freeman (once principal bass of the Boston Symphony Orchestra), and photographs.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Henry &amp; Florence Freeman Papers (000.78)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Location: A3B 3,4<\/p>\n<p>.1 linear foot<\/p>\n<p>Items relating to the parents of Robert Freeman, former director of Eastman School.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Hermann Genhart Papers (000.25)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Location: A3B 8,1<\/p>\n<p>.1 linear foot<\/p>\n<p>Genhart was conductor of the Eastman School of Music chorus from 1925 to 1965 and also of Teutonia Liedertofel, a leading German singing society in Rochester. The archive contains personal correspondence, programs, and photos.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/esm4.esm.rochester.edu\/sibley\/files\/Jacques-Gordon-Collection.pdf\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Jacques Gordon Papers (994.1)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Location: A4A 1,3<\/p>\n<p>2.5 linear feet<\/p>\n<p>Professor of violin from 1942 to 1948 (died 1948). Gordon was a Russian born violinist who concertized in Russia and Europe before coming to the United States in 1914. He was also Concert master of the Chicago Symphony from 1921 to 1930. He founded and headed the Gordon String Quartet from 1921 to 1947. The collection contains various scores and\/or parts from the Gordon String Quartet, with markings, as well as other scores for violin.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/esm4.esm.rochester.edu\/sibley\/files\/Ruth-Hannas-Papers.pdf\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Ruth Hannas Papers (992.6)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Location: A3A 7,2-3<\/p>\n<p>3 linear feet<\/p>\n<p>Novelist, poet, short story writer, and musicologist. Hannas was the first woman to earn a doctorate in music in the United States, graduating from the Eastman School of Music in 1934. Subsequently she taught music for twelve years at Berkeley High School, San Francisco State Teacher\u2019s College, and the University of California moving to the University of North Carolina. The collection contains poetry, prose, novels, articles, and two books in various stages of completion, including sketches, drafts, and final manuscripts from circa 1930 to 1970.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Howard Hanson interview 1978 (000.35)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Location: A3B 8,2<\/p>\n<p>1 linear foot<\/p>\n<p>Audio cassettes of a 1978 interview.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/esm4.esm.rochester.edu\/sibley\/files\/Frederick-Haywood-Papers.pdf\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Frederick Haywood Papers (992.5)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Location: A3A 5,6<\/p>\n<p>1 linear foot<\/p>\n<p>Haywood was a member of the choral faculty in Eastman\u2019s Preparatory Department (CED) from 1924 to 1954. He was also instructor of singing and author of \u201cUniversal Song\u201d (1917) which promoted group singing instruction in schools. The collection contains articles on Mr. Haywood, and photos.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">David Hochstein Papers (000.66)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Location: A3A 7,5<\/p>\n<p>.1 linear foot<\/p>\n<p>David Hochstein (1892-1918) was a Rochester born violinist who began his studies with Ludwig Schenck in Rochester. Under the patronage of George Eastman and Emily Sibley Watson, Mr. Hochstein went to Europe to study with Otakar Sevcik and Leopold Auer. He concertized throughout Europe during his studies. He taught at the Institute of Musical Art in Rochester from 1915 to 1916, and made his New York debut in 1917. Shortly thereafter he enlisted in the army and died on the battlefield in France in 1918. Under the initiative of Emily Sibley Watson, the Hochstein School of Music was created in his memory. The collection contains a small group of compositions by Mr. Hochstein, and some of his personal scores.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Sydney Hodkinson Manuscripts (998.7)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Location: M8A 2,1-4<\/p>\n<p>8 linear foot<\/p>\n<p>The compositions of professor of composition Sydney Hodkinson. Many in both draft and final copy versions.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/esm4.esm.rochester.edu\/sibley\/specialcollections\/findingaids\/horgan\/\">Paul Horgan Collection (SC1995.6)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Location: M1A 1,1<\/p>\n<p>1.75 linear feet<\/p>\n<p>The collection mainly contains manuscript drafts of Paul Horgan&#8217;s (1903-1995) <i>The Fault of Angels<\/i>, which show the development of the novel from its first draft to the author&#8217;s galleys, annotated by the publisher. The novel is based upon musical life in Rochester at the Eastman School of Music, thinly disguised, during Horgan&#8217;s student days at the School (1923-1926). Also included with the manuscripts are excised and revised passages from earlier drafts. The series of congratulatory telegrams offers insight into Horgan&#8217;s personal life and associates at the time of the book&#8217;s publication. An ancillary collection of student newsletters and concert programs provides information about Horgan&#8217;s involvement with the Eastman School and his activities, which later influenced his novel.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Julius Huehn Papers(000.14)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Location: A3B 5,4<\/p>\n<p>.25 linear foot<\/p>\n<p>Professor of voice from 1952 to 1971 (died 1971) and chair of the voice department from 1965 until his death. Mr. Huehn had a successful career as a baritone during the 1930\u2019s and 40\u2019s and sang with the Metropolitan Opera Company and many other opera companies and orchestras in America. He was especially recognized as a singer of Wagnerian roles. The collection contains a small group of his personal scores.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Jean Ingelow Papers (000.10)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Location: A3B 5,4<\/p>\n<p>.25 linear foot<\/p>\n<p>Jean Ingelow studied classical organ music with Harold Gleason at Eastman beginning in the School\u2019s inaugural year of 1921. She began her studies at the D.K.G. Institute of Musical Art in Rochester. Ingelow was a silent movie pianist in Livonia and worked as church organist in numerous locations in Rochester and the surrounding area. She was given honorary alumna status of the Eastman School before her death. The collection contains her theory workbooks from the Institute of Musical Art, some compositions by her, her notes on the Institute of Musical Art, and a 1975 article from Theatre Organ on her life.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/esm4.esm.rochester.edu\/sibley\/files\/Jessie-Hoskam-Kneisel-Papers.pdf\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Jessie Kneisel Papers (994.4)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Location: A3B 4,5-5,3<\/p>\n<p>12 linear feet<\/p>\n<p>Professor of German at Eastman from 1935 to 1976, Kneisel was a Rochester native and received her B.A. and M.A. from the University of Rochester. She received her Ph.D. from Columbia. She taught German language, literature, and diction at Eastman. The Jessie Kneisel Lieder Prize, given annually to the winner of a singing competition, was begun in 1982 in her honor. The collection contains her date books and diaries, notes on various German-related topics, correspondence, articles on composers, and her teaching material.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Max Landow Papers (000.9)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Location: A3B 5,4<\/p>\n<p>.25 linear foot<\/p>\n<p>Professor of piano from 1922 to 1946, Landow was born in Germany where he graduated from the Scharwenka Conservatory in Berlin and also studied with Karl Klindworth. He had an active solo career in Europe and the United States and appeared with various orchestras. The collection contains a scrapbook and correspondence.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Arthur Larson Papers (994.3)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Location: A3A 7,3<\/p>\n<p>.75 linear foot<\/p>\n<p>Registrar at the Eastman School of Music from 1929 to 1961. The collection contains the President\u2019s report (Howard Hanson\u2019s annual reports) from 1933 to 1954, plus other miscellaneous material.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">MacAndrews Scrapbook (000.24)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Location: A3B 4,3<\/p>\n<p>.1 linear foot<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy Dodd MacAndrews was a piano student of Raymond Wilson during the first years of the Eastman School of Music. The collection includes one scrapbook filled with Eastman performance programs from 1921 to 1926 and other ephemera that relates to her years at the School.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/esm4.esm.rochester.edu\/sibley\/files\/Alfred-Mann-Collection.pdf\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Alfred Mann Collection (000.30)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Location: A3B 3,3-4<\/p>\n<p>2.5 linear feet<\/p>\n<p>Professor emeritus of musicology who came to Eastman in 1980, Mann is a Baroque music specialist with emphasis on Bach and Handel. He is the author of several books and contributor to numerous publications and scholarly journals. The collection includes scores, photos, clippings, correspondence, and writings of Mann.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/esm4.esm.rochester.edu\/sibley\/files\/W.-Francis-McBeth-Papers-1961-1992.pdf\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Francis McBeth Papers (000.11)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Location: A3B 5,5<\/p>\n<p>1 linear feet<\/p>\n<p>A selection of copies of manuscripts of the works of alumnus Francis McBeth.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/esm4.esm.rochester.edu\/sibley\/files\/Allen-I-McHose-Papers.pdf\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Allen McHose Papers (992.1)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Location: A3A 6,1-3<\/p>\n<p>7.5 linear feet<\/p>\n<p>Theory professor from 1929 to 1967 and chair of theory from 1931. McHose acted as Howard Hanson\u2019s administrative assistant from 1941 to 1953. He became the director of the Eastman summer school programs from 1953, and the Associate Dean of Eastman from 1962. The collection contains student papers, classroom and teaching material, copies of his published books, manuscripts of works by McHose and others, and materials collected from various events.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/esm4.esm.rochester.edu\/sibley\/files\/George-MacNabb-Papers.pdf\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">George McNabb Papers (991.2)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Location: A3A 8,5<\/p>\n<p>.5 linear foot<\/p>\n<p>Piano professor from 1923 to 1960 (died 1960). Mr. McNabb performed solo concerts and accompanied various artists. He appeared with orchestras in Rochester and in various U.S. cities. The collection contains his lecture notes.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">George Barlow Penny Papers (000.76)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Location: A3B 2,1<\/p>\n<p>.1 linear foot<\/p>\n<p>Director of the Rochester Conservatory of Music from 1910 to 1915, and Dean of the Institute of Musical Art in Rochester and teacher of theory, composition, history, and organ from 1915 to 1921. Penny continued teaching at Eastman. He died in 1934. (See also Rochester Conservatories under Eastman Archives.) The collection contains his personal notebook on music.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Emory Remington Papers (000.8)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Location: A3B 4,3<\/p>\n<p>.1 linear foot<\/p>\n<p>Trombone professor from 1922 until his death in 1971. Remington was the first trombonist with the RPO and Civic Orchestra from 1923 to 1949. He became an internationally renowned teacher of trombone. The includes one scrapbook of the 1955 surprise reunion of his former students.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Cyril Roberts Papers (995.1)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Location: A3A 7,5<\/p>\n<p>1 linear foot<\/p>\n<p>Chaplain at the Eastman School of Music from 1972 to 1993. The collection contains Mr. Robert\u2019s books, correspondence, and ephemera.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/esm4.esm.rochester.edu\/sibley\/specialcollections\/findingaids\/brogers\/\">Bernard Rogers Collection (SC1998.64)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Location: M2B 4,4<br \/>\n1 linear foot<\/p>\n<p>The collection contains various printed miniature scores of other composers&#8217; music, primarily orchestral works, many annotated with analytical markings by Bernard Rogers. Rogers (1893-1968) was a composer and teacher of composition who served on the faculty of the Eastman School of Music from 1929 to 1967. He studied at the Institute of Musical Art in New York and was a pupil of Ernest Bloch and Nadia Boulanger.
