(Adrien) Barthe (1828-1898), a pseudonym for Grat-Norbert Barthe. Barthe began his music studies with piano and composition lessons, and eventually became a student of Leborne at the Paris Conservatory. In 1854 he took first prize in composition at the Rome Institute with a cantata entitled Francesca de Rimini. His later oratorio Judith and opera Don Carlos also won acclaim. Halévy praised Don Carlos as “…well written, instrumentated with care…and giving true hope for M. Barthe’s future…”. After his return from Rome, Barthe attempted to work in the theater, but to no avail until 1864, when his opera la Fiancée d’Abydos won first prize in a competition, and was subsequently staged at the Theater-Lyrique on December 30, 1865. Due to a weak libretto, however, la Fiancée d’Abydos never attained a place in the repertoire and it was shortly thereafter that Barthe decided to discontinue his career as a composer. He married Mlle. Banderali, daughter of the singer of that name, who had herself achieved a considerable reputation in her father’s field. Norbert took up a career as a teacher, apparently working for the French government as well, in which connection he published his composition text. In addition to a piece for piano four hands and a set of pieces for oboe and piano, the published works also include an autographed copy of Barthe’s prize winning opera la Fiancée d’Abydos. The bulk of manuscripts consist of songs for voice and piano, and the composition text materials are sketches and entries Barthe used for a composition contest in 1898. The material is of interest to the study of nineteenth-century French opera and especially art song as practiced by a minor but respected composer.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Restrictions and Use” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Montserrat%3Aregular%2C700|font_style:700%20bold%20regular%3A700%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1686765618013{margin-top: 30px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column_text]There are no restrictions on the use of the collection.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Associations” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Montserrat%3Aregular%2C700|font_style:700%20bold%20regular%3A700%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1686765679358{margin-top: 30px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column_text]The Library owns the library of the French music critic and author, Arthur Pougin (1834-1921), which was purchased in 1923.
